My Story

Greg Thompson, PhD (Interdisciplinary Humanities), is a historian, cultural studies scholar, and veteran educator whose specialty is transforming history into unforgettable, audience-friendly experiences. Over more than two decades in the classroom and the public square, he has taught American and world history, art and film, and cultural memory to learners from middle school to college and adult lifelong-learning communities. Today, he brings that range and warmth to enrichment programs for cruise lines, museums, resorts, historical societies, libraries, and senior living communities.

Greg’s work bridges scholarship and storytelling. He explores how places and media shape memory: Why do we picture the past the way we do? How do films, paintings, architecture, and even theme parks influence our sense of history? His programs invite audiences to see familiar stories with fresh eyes: the Spanish-American War and Tampa Bay’s role in 1898; the Gilded Age’s glitter and grit; Revolutionary battlefields as “landscapes of liberty”; Edward Hopper’s staged realism and American solitude; Hitchcock’s Hollywood as a mirror of mid-century anxieties; the Cuban Missile Crisis in 12 minutes; and “history outdoors” adventures that connect trails, shorelines, monuments, and museums.

A deft curator of images and anecdotes, Greg is known for presentations that are visually rich, rigorously researched, and warmly delivered. He has designed series for travel itineraries (river and ocean), museum gallery talks, resort cultural evenings, and senior living lecture circuits, tailoring each program to the audience’s pace and interests. His “History Hidden in Plain Sight” and “Journeys Through History” projects bring heritage tourism to life through short-form videos, lecture series, and printable field guides.

Greg’s current projects support upcoming commemorations leading to the U.S. Semiquincentennial (250th) and the Centennial of Route 66 in 2026, with special attention to historic sites, environmental history, and inclusive memory. Beyond the podium, he consults with cultural organizations on audience engagement, narrative design, and program development, helping teams build offerings that both educate and delight.

Whether at sea, on shore, or in residence, Greg’s events feel like guided discoveries: clear, lively, and full of “I never knew that” moments—perfect for travelers, museumgoers, and lifelong learners who want culture with their leisure.
